A Spot of Spring

Spot-of-Spring-Embroidered-Key-Tag_0001

Inspired by this free pattern offered over at Craftsy last Friday, I decided to dive into my threads and have some fun. I may or may not use my little creation as a key ring tag as the pattern instructs — my version is a little on the large size for the purses I carry — but it would make a good, if small, coaster/mug rug… but I don’t want to get coffee stains on it! So I don’t know!!! For now, I’ll just leave it hanging around to enjoy :)

Are you familiar with Craftsy? Fantastic site for classes of any variety! Plus, on their blog — add it to your blog-reader — they link you up to at least one free pattern every Friday! I love my feedly, by the way.

Several years ago I taught a troop of Brownies a few basic embroidery skills. While I was searching for fabric scraps and floss for this project I ran across the samples I had made. I ended up turning one of those samples into my Spot of Spring here!

The orchid fabric (color of the year, hey!) already was stitched with the inner white flower, dark green stems using running stitch which you can barely still see, and the hot-fix gems in the centers of the flowers.

Adding some extra layers of thread around the flowers, lacing the stem’s stitches with another green; that didn’t take too long. But then using the blue-purple perle cotton to chain stitch all the layers together around the edge: cotton embroidered fabric, some dense batting, and a chunk of heavy denim for the backing — WHEW! And then whip stitching the newly cut raw edge with more light green … that took some time and finger power! Denim was a questionable choice LOL

This little circle has just the casual look to it that I was going for, and it really only took a couple hours while watching TV. The colors make me happy. Springtime flowers are blooming inside and out :)

Stitch a little Springtime somewhere!
