Apple Tea Towel

Three poor unsuspecting apples. Little did they know, very soon, two of them would sacrifice themselves for the sake of art.

Well, art may be stretching it, but it did involve paint!

I’ve been wanting to print apples on some of my tea towels for a long time, because I’ve grown tired of them in all their plaid cottony usefulness. I figured what better time than APPLE WEEK at 2create?

If it weren’t for stopping to take photos, this was a 20 minute project. Including hauling the apples upstairs, gathering the paints, and setting it all up in my son’s recently vacated bedroom.

…which is now the Painting and Other-Messiness Room. He’s on board with that. He’s been giving it a painty, spattery head start for the last 3 years. I’m using the Easy Button: why replace carpet, sand down closet doors to refinish them, and scrub and repaint the walls just yet? When I can take advantage of a worry-free mess-making space for a while? Exactly.

So two bottles of acrylic paint, those poor clueless apples, a knife, a tea towel and I had a fun little creative session this morning!

… resulting in this one apple print tea towel. It was super easy with a sponge brush to dab on the paint. I ended up with some pools of yellow in the seed cavity of the one which could have been a disaster if I’d held the apple down much longer. But again, this process is so quick that the paint had no time to cause any drippy trouble.

A bit of red dabbed around the skin edge let me outline and define the circle prints. A tiny scribble with brown Scribbles paint created just the right accent for the seeds and stem.

I could have ironed that first, right? Well, maybe next time. No amount of re-orienting this photo was going to make those disappear. But hey, our blog is about crafting and creating in our normal flow of life, so there you have it!

I am so happy with these! I might take needle and thread to it and add some more creative bits in the future. That’s my backup for when I get tired of them again. I doubt it will be another 20 years though!

Apples have so many talents! (I wonder if there’s still enough damp paint on those apples to add an apple stamp to the walls in there… ?)

Happy Apple-y September —
