Graduation Cake!

Just in case you can’t tell from the photos… that is a lot of cake.  Like… 10 batches!  Granted, I made them 2-3 batches at a time, but still… that is a whole nights worth of baking.  And that’s just the baking, we aren’t talking about the decorating here.  yet.  ;)  Here’s my go-to chocolate cake recipe, “Perfectly Chocolate” Chocolate Cake. It is also conveniently on the Hershey’s cocoa container!

I don’t make fondant cakes very often any more, but I made basically this same cake for my cousin two years ago when he graduated high school.  And this year, his little brother graduated, so cake number two got created this weekend for his gradation party!  It’s pretty much a replica of their gym bags… both my cousins were athletic guys so it was a fitting tribute to their high school days.  :)

And yes… it is a lot of time-consuming work.  But… it was also a lot of fun!

And quite the arm/wrist workout… coloring that much fondant is hard!

I mean check out the finished product:

It was quite a hit at the party!  And yes… you fancy cake decorators, don’t you be lookin’ too closely because I know there are boo-boos… but I’m pretty proud of my occasional cake decorating skills!  :)

Oh… and it tasted good.  :D

Oh… and I have about 2 batches worth of cake scraps now stored in my freezer from shaping the cake…

…cake pops anybody?  ;)

Happy Gradation to my cousin and all the other grads out there!!!

Sam
