The Year of the Sewing Machine

I forsee that 2013 will be the Year of the Sewing Machine! Not only does Sam have her first one, but I have plans, projects, and fabrics I WILL accomplish this year. There are many reasons behind this prediction!

I started off the New Year right, by sewing a complete project to bring good sewing luck for the year. I stumbled across this tradition of someone else’s at patternreview.com late in 2011 and adopted it immediately.

Since my husband and I spend New Year’s Day out and about with Sam and Aaron, I didn’t get started until after dark. But that’s OK!! I chose one of the quickest and easiest projects I could.

I also chose this project because I desperately need and want more flannel jammie pants! I’ve had this *GREEN* and *SNOWMAN* flannel (all favorites!!) since fall 2011,but didn’t get it sewn up for last winter’s wear. These snowpeeps have been calling my name all year since!

I used THE easiest PJ pants pattern ever, and simplified it even further by making an elastic waist instead of a drawstring. No little buttonholes in flannel, no drawstring to make, and easier to wear also.

Taking pics of the process — I was thinking tutorial at first — made the project last oh-so-much-longer than it should! But I finished with the machine and the last picture at 11:51pm!

Lest you think I stayed up late to finish, think again! That’s barely the time of day I ever begin to think about bedtime ;) Maybe I should make some (night)owl flannel PJ pants next!

Can’t wait to snuggle in to these! They are all ready to wear, because I pre-wash and dry all cotton flannel at least twice before I use it, in order to get its pesky 8-10% shrinkage taken care of before I sew with it. Because *I* am certainly not going to shrink 8-10% between sewing and wearing comfy cozy flannel PJ pants!

(Of course, I have made a New Year’s Resolution to do some personal shrinkage — isn’t that a standard list item?)

Other plans and resolutions for the 2013:

I will bring you a pie crust lesson (and pie recipe) every month! I’m pretty good at pie crust, lessons, and pies! If you want to be ready for the 2013 holiday season with awesome from-scratch pie crusts and pies, stick around!

I love letters, alphabets, and lists… I am going to have a personal theme word per week, starting with A and running through the alphabet twice.  It will end quite nicely with Z for the week after Christmas next December: zzzzzz…. zzzzzz… some after-Christmas napping, preferably snuggling somebody warm and cuddly :)

Sam and I are currently intrigued by Joanne Fink’s Zenspirations letters, so we’ll probably be doodling out some creativity, and I really really want to take a drawing class (but I’ll try not to be too annoying by showing you my amateur drawings!) But I will show you my amateur mixed-messy-media creative explosions :)

I hope you have an “A”wesome 2013 planned for yourself! I am starting off this week inspired by “A”ccomplish as my theme word! So far, so good, as long as I’m not having to rely on my slow-as-molasses-in-January (haha) computer, like today was spent.

Happy Happy Happy New Year! The Year of the Sewing Machine! Let’s Accomplish something creative every day, whether it is sewing or not — we all deserve to let those creative juices flow freely!
