Update 4/25/2013… After thousands of hits on this post and MANY requests for my revisions to the pattern link below, I have created my own basic pattern for this slipper: found here, and also created a whole post on tips and tricks for customizing your slippers for your feet: found here. Enjoy reading the original post below, but make sure you check out the new posts on these slippers if you want to create your own!!
Happy 4th of July!! I’m sure you all have fantastic plans for today so I’m going to make this short and sweet so you can get to them!
I made myself some cute little crochet slippers and thought they turned out awesome so I wanted to share! I’ve never owned slippers before, but there is this time of day for me, between getting out of bed and taking a shower, where I don’t want to waste a new pair of socks but i want my feet to be a little cozier… the perfect time for slippers!
I followed a free online tutorial (although modified a bit for my feet… I didn’t want them to be so high over my toes) and they were super easy! They fit well and I love the colors I chose! I think I am going to embellish them soon. Maybe a button. Or crochet flowers? We’ll see. Enjoy the photos and have a safe and super fun 4th!! <3 Sam (SEE UPDATES ABOVE AND/OR BELOW POST PHOTOS FOR MORE INFO ON THESE SLIPPERS)
UPDATE: After a few questions I wanted to add an update to this post! A little more info on the modifications I made to the pattern link above. For my size 7-7.5 feet, I crocheted 9 rounds at the toe instead of 13 as the pattern calls for, and only 22 rows total (including the toe rounds). Also, instead of the sc and chain stitch around the edges I did dc around the edges. I hope that helps you crochet a pair of your own cozy slippers! I’m always available for questions through the comments below or send us an email! 2createsg@gmail.com
UPDATE #2: See the Basic Slipper Pattern I created after many requests on this post, and make sure you check out the tips and tricks post I created to customize these slippers for your feet!
Becky Fitzpatrick - Hi I was wondering if you sell your slippers online anywhere?08.29.2012 – 9:41pm
admin - Hi Becky! I don’t sell anywhere at the moment, the limited amount of crocheting I do is usually just for me! :) Thanks for the compliment though! You can find similar versions on etsy if you are interested! :)08.30.2012 – 6:49am
Debby Bailey - Love the slippers. Where can I find the pattern?08.31.2012 – 2:10pm
admin - Hi Debby! Here is the link to the pattern: http://zoomyummy.com/2011/01/21/how-to-make-simple-crochet-slippers/
I’d love to see a photo if you make them! -Sam08.31.2012 – 5:40pm
Sabrina - I totally want to make these. I love footie slippers. I have never done any crocheting before. Is this fairly easy for a beginner?09.11.2012 – 9:14pm
admin - Sabrina! Glad you like them! I’m definitely still finding them cozy! I find crocheting lots of fun and very relaxing! Granted, this was not my first crochet project but I think these slippers were pretty easy to make! The link in this post takes you to a great blog with step by step directions, and if you have any issues with any of the steps I’ve always found youtube videos on crocheting very helpful to get me started! If you make them I would love to see how they turn out!! – Sam09.13.2012 – 4:36pm
Bonnie - Me friends r loving these slippers. I was wondering what type and color of yarn u used. They want some just like yours.09.19.2012 – 6:06am
admin - I used Loops&Threads Impeccable Yarn in Summerset! I loved the color combo too!09.19.2012 – 2:14pm
Katie Ellen - These look lovely! You mentioned you modified the pattern, could you share what you changed? I prefer the way you did it, more than the original pattern ;) thanks!09.29.2012 – 3:42pm
admin - Thanks! I believe I only crocheted 9 rounds at the toe instead of 13 as the pattern called for. Also for my size 7, maybe 7.5size, feet I only crocheted 22 rows total (including the toe rounds)! Let me know if you have any other questions and I hope you enjoy some lovely cozy slippers too! :)10.03.2012 – 4:39pm
Stacy Pearson - I have tried different yarns and altering the pattern but these keep coming out to big. Any suggestions?09.30.2012 – 8:31pm
admin - Stacy, maybe try using a smaller gauge crochet hook? I know I tend to crochet really tight so I use a bigger hook than usually called for, maybe we have the opposite problem. ;)10.03.2012 – 4:42pm
T. Gatwood - Awesome!!! I have been wanting to get into crocheting but haven’t yet!!! After seeing these. I’m dying 2. I wanna pair! Lol10.08.2012 – 10:08pm
Elinor Flynn - how do I get the pattern for these slippers – they look so comfortable10.09.2012 – 7:16am
admin - Here is the link: http://zoomyummy.com/2011/01/21/how-to-make-simple-crochet-slippers/10.11.2012 – 9:45am
debbie - Hi love these slippers and your beautiful blog. What size yarn did you use?10.11.2012 – 5:18am
admin - Size 4 medium yarn! :)10.11.2012 – 9:44am
Lacie - Very cute slippers! Do they stay on your feet well? I’d love to make these but am concerned about them slipping off.10.19.2012 – 10:46pm
Carrie - I love these slippers and am attempting to make a pair for the first time ever! I know this is probably a silly question, but as you’re working on the toe part, do you join with a sl st to finish each row of the spiral? I know, silly right? Anyway, I’d appreciate any help.10.23.2012 – 9:27am
admin - Hi Carrie! No worries, that’s not a silly question! I did not join each round with a sl st, I just worked in the round and kept track of my first stitch of each round with a crochet marker so I could keep track of how many rows I had done! Hope that answers your question! We’d love to see how your finished slippers turn out, an email with a photo would make my day!! – Sam10.23.2012 – 9:31am
Peggy - Do you think these slippers would work out ok in cotton thread instead of yarn? Reason is that is all I have and I’m really wanting to try to make a pair. Thanks for the pattern.10.23.2012 – 2:20pm
Carrie - Hi Sam, it’s me, Carrie, again. I made one slipper, and I have to say, it looks pretty ugly. Here are a few of my problems. The edge of the slipper (where the ch 3 dc are) are holey and uneven even though the number of stitches across each row is the same. Then when I completed the slipper and began the sc across the top of the edges, they followed the bumpiness, instead of smoothing it out, and looked terrible. In the photos you posted of the slippers you made, the edging actually looked thicker and more even than the ones in the tutorial. YOUR slippers are more tight looking. Did you do anything different other than decrease the size of the toe cap? And HOW in the world do you make the edge look nice and even and tight when it’s made up of turning chains? I’m so frustrated!10.27.2012 – 6:38am
admin - Carrie! I’m so glad you brought up this question… I’m actually going to go add an update to my post! After further inspection of my slippers it does look like I modified in another way… Instead of turning chains for the edges, it looks like I did dc all the way around. Sometimes I know it can be hard to decide where to stitch when you are going around the edges, my advice is: when in doubt add a stitch! As for the other issues, it could just be not making uniform stitching? I tend to crochet very tight and often bump myself up a hook size to compensate for my tight stitches, but doing that I know my stitches are even. I hope you can get it figured out! I am in no ways a crochet expert, so I hope my simple advice is helping at least a little! Good luck!10.30.2012 – 10:20am
Lavinia - So glad I’ve found your blog!!! I only just started crocheting but why not give these a try? I’ll keep you updated, thanks for sharing!
Lavinia10.30.2012 – 3:50pm
admin - Good luck Lavinia! Thanks for following us! :)10.31.2012 – 10:55am
Monica - What type of yarn did you use around the edge?11.01.2012 – 8:22pm
Monica - Sorry I meant what color for the edge?11.02.2012 – 7:13pm
admin - It was Loops & Threads, Rouge! :)11.08.2012 – 4:40pm
Monica - Love them and the colors you used!!!! How much yarn did you need….how many skiens? Can’t wait to make them!!! Will head to the store tomorrow for the yarn!
Thanks for taking the time to post the pictures and instructions!!11.07.2012 – 5:58pm
admin - I used maybe half a skein for the slippers, and hardly any off of a different color for the edging! Happy Crocheting! Would love to see a photo when you finish!! email us at 2createsg@gmail.com -Sam11.08.2012 – 4:41pm
aj - Hi! I just started making me a pair of these slippers and I’m wondering, am I supposed to slip stitch on row four? It doesn’t say to, but it doesn’t make since if I don’t. :/ Thanks!11.23.2012 – 9:42am
aj - also, am I not supposed to chain 3 on rows 5-13?11.23.2012 – 9:44am
admin - Hi AJ! I didn’t slip stitch, I just crocheted in the round all the way from the beginning. In which case you don’t need to chain 3, you would only need that if you slip stitch and needed to restart a round. Does that make sense? Let me know if you have other questions!11.26.2012 – 11:56am
Charlotte - These are so cute!! Thank you so much for giving the directions. I’m not a pro..but will definitely gives these a try!!11.23.2012 – 2:37pm
admin - I’m definitely not a pro by any means either Charlotte! Hope they work well for you! Email us a photo when you are done!!11.26.2012 – 11:57am
Aubrey - these are SUPER CUTE!!! I like them way better than the original, and Sommerset is one of my favorite shades. I have it in Bernat softee chunky, I may give these a try with that (ok actually I have to make a pair in a green shade first, lol)11.29.2012 – 5:17am
admin - Thanks Aubrey! I think these would be SO comfy in a chunky yarn! But, my mom/blogging partner is going to love that you are going to make them in GREEN… she is obsessed with everything green ;) Love to see a photo when you are done! Email us! -Sam11.29.2012 – 11:15am
admin - Oh, yes, please email us a pic of your **GREEN* slippers :) :) I am sure they’ll be the best slippers ever! -Gail11.30.2012 – 9:25pm
Dixie Lu - I am about to make myself a pair in Green :) Gail, I am also obsessed with everything green! I’ll email a pic when I’m done :)12.01.2012 – 4:01pm
admin - Well, I might just have to make myself a pair of green ones, now! I’m pretty sure I have some yarn… (everybody who knows my craft stash just burst out laughing and rolling their eyes) -Gail12.02.2012 – 11:03am
Kevo - I’m not sure how you did these, but mine came out absolutely horrendous!
Any way you could re-write the old pattern with your tweaks?12.16.2012 – 10:17pm
admin - Thanks for the question! I didn’t realize how popular these slippers with my tweaks would become. I’m working on a pattern re-write and it will be up sometime in January!12.20.2012 – 9:29am
Barb - Can you use any type if wool? I’m thinking about making a pair with a baby yarn (for myself). I can’t remember the exact name but it is a fancy type wool, the slippers would look somewhat fluffy.12.18.2012 – 7:27pm
admin - I don’t see why you couldn’t. I’m not a yarn expert by any means, but I’m sure these slippers could be created with many different kinds of yarn. You just have to be careful with washing wool.12.20.2012 – 9:30am
Mrs. Fellinger - Can’t wait to tey and make these tonight for me and my husband. Ive never made any before but it looks simple and your directions are so easy to follow.12.26.2012 – 7:03pm
kim - Oh my gosh, I just started crocheting, and I mean just started, as in today, and I am so inspired by these! I absolutely love slippers and these are perfect! These are first on my to do list!12.26.2012 – 9:45pm
Jennifer - Please sell these!!!!12.28.2012 – 8:28pm
Milene - Love these!!01.01.2013 – 1:07pm
Joy - So easy! Love them!01.02.2013 – 4:58am
Sabrina Apau - I found this pattern on that website too. I tweaked the pattern a lot to fit my feet and now I make them in Maryjanes and I made some for my husband. Love them.01.02.2013 – 10:29pm
Petra Lopez - Love how adorable these are….giving it a go right now…if I can just hunt down a size G-4 hook ;). Thank you for the inspiration.01.03.2013 – 10:40am
amber - I tried the pattern given and it was a disaster. now i’m just winging it with many (many!) increases & decreases to fit the contours of my foot. halfway done & looks good so far! just have to try it on every 2 rows or so.01.16.2013 – 4:00pm
admin - amber, it so depends on your personal tension and how thick your yarn really is. Sam and I will be putting up a revised pattern. It will include tips to make sure they end up fitting your foot! Sorry you had trouble, but now you’ll have totally unique slippers!01.16.2013 – 9:33pm
Tina - This are sooooo cute I may want to learn to crochet myself!!!!!!!01.19.2013 – 8:20pm
Sandra - I am IN LOVE!! Perfect style, perfect colours, perfect comfort! I could NEVER make these but I love them so much, I would like to ask if you wouldn’t mind making me a pair, same colour as yours and I will pay you $50-$60 Canadian! I will also pay shipping and handeling if you are up for it! I would love a little bow embellishment if you would be so kind. I understand life can be busy so I will understand if you turn this offer down as well! Cheers for 2013!! Your slippers either way are beautiful!
Sandra01.24.2013 – 10:30am
admin - Sandra, what a huge compliment that is! Thank you! Unfortunately I believe I have to turn your offer down, while very generous I am no expert in crochet and can only imagine the multitude of things that could go wrong in getting you a perfect pair of slippers for your feet. If you search etsy you can find similar ones! Thank you again! – Sam01.28.2013 – 11:45am
Katrina - Hi when the pattern starts into a spiral how do you prevent the gap it makes? Also when slip stitches do you do it in the ch 3 or 1st dc? Thanks!!02.03.2013 – 5:37am
admin - I started with a ‘magic ring’ so you can cinch down the circle if that is the gap you are referring to. You can youtube videos of how to do it! And I did not use slip stitches, I just crocheted in the round and kept track of how many rows. If you read back through some of the comments I talk about how many rows I used. I’m working on a pattern re-write so I can explain exactly how I modified the original pattern. Happy stitching! :)02.04.2013 – 4:17pm
Millyvanilly - I came across your blog on Pinterest. Loved your slippers so much that I just had to make them! I love crocheting and paper crafting. I mentioned you in my blog today and added a link to your site. Hope you don’t mind.
Looking forward to seeing more of your creations!02.10.2013 – 8:29pm
admin - Thanks MillyVanilly! We always appreciate links to our blog! Thanks for following!! :) -Sam02.11.2013 – 9:31am
admin - To Millyvanilly — Gail here, the other admin that makes 2create actually “2”… I have to chime in and say you have a creative way with yarn! Love all your variations of the slippers you have made — nice job!02.12.2013 – 10:05am
Kathie - Did you ever post your pattern with revisions? I tried the original and, like others, it was a disaster. I’d love to try it with your variations.02.16.2013 – 5:47am
admin - Kathie, we haven’t yet. Sam and I got together for a few days in January and that was on our agenda, but there were these matters of pregnancy talk (plus how tired she was because of it) and the most vicious jigsaw puzzle ever… we’ll be getting our hooks out ASAP though — thanks for the reminder!! –Gail02.16.2013 – 7:15am

Sam’s notes about how she changed up the pattern are at the very bottom of the post. Everyone loves her slippers! Happy Crocheting! –Gail04.09.2013 – 7:25pm
Arlene burke - I can’t wait to make a pair of these. Sometimes I walk with a cane and since we have wood floors I am afraid of slipping. If I put dabs or lines of puff paint on the bottoms I wonder if it would keep me from sliding.04.19.2013 – 2:20pm
admin - Arlene, I have wondered about putting that kind of paint on the bottoms of slippers or socks, too! Don’t take any chances! I’ll try it for you — I’m crocheting up a pair for myself, and I have hardwood floors, too. I’m going to use “slick” paint in the little bottles. I figure it’s grippier. –Gail04.22.2013 – 12:02pm
Arlene - Thanks Gail. PLease don’t rush but I will wait to see if the puff paint works on the bottom. If it does work these slippers will be wonderful for children. Arlene05.05.2013 – 7:53pm
admin - Oh, you must have missed my email, Arlene! I used some of the “slick” paint made by Scribbles in the teeny bottles, and it works great!
Just put it on the high spots of yarn, in the heel and ball-of-your-foot areas of your slipper. Let it cure for 24 hours.
I kind of scribbled mine INTO the yarns a bit, just to make sure it wouldn’t peel off at all.
Hurray, right!? This will be added to the Tips and Tricks post soon :) –Gail05.06.2013 – 3:33pm
Arlene - Gail, you’ve made my day. I think I’ll be making big ones and little ones. I’m very excited. Do you think men and teenaged boys would wear them?05.10.2013 – 5:33pm
admin - Hurray, Arlene! That was easy ;) As for men and boys, I would think that would totally depend on the individual as I know several women who *wouldn’t* wear these… to each their own! My next pair is going to be from some merino wool — warm and not scratchy in the least — I’ll like them better myself!

Claudia - Just got done with one, my problem was the front (toes area) turned out kind of point not rounded like yours. Also I noted that for a size 7 or 7 1/2 the total from beginning till foot hill just needed 21 rows. Pls let me know how to make these with a beautiful rounded front.07.15.2013 – 1:50pm
admin - I’m glad you could follow the pattern Claudia! Right at the top of this post there is a link for a tips and tricks page for custumizing your slippers. Look at Tip #7! sheri - My toes are pointy on the slippers!! No matter what I’ve tried…help please..thanks01.06.2014 – 11:23pm
admin - Sheri, have you finished crocheting the slipper all the way, stitched it up, and then tried it on? When I was making myself a pair (to check the pattern for Sam) mine seemed like it wasn’t going to fit at the toe. When I finished it to the right length (shorter than your foot!) and put it on, the stretching took away the pointiness.
Be sure to check all the tips and tricks, and follow Sam’s particular version for best results.
If it still doesn’t conform to your toes, try making the first row of stitches (the ones in the ring) very snug. Let us know how it goes! If you still need help, maybe we’ll have some new creative ideas by then! –Gail01.07.2014 – 9:43am

Lovey - I love the slippers and have figured how to alter the pattern for my feet. But I’m curious is there a way to make them a bit more stiff to hold their shape?06.10.2014 – 2:14pm
admin - Hi, Lovey! Gail here. So glad you’ve made and love Sam’s slipper pattern! The only way to get a more sturdy crochet fabric is to use a smaller crochet hook and/or increase your tension, so that more stitches and rows fit into the same size of crocheted piece. The more yarn crammed into the crocheted fabric, the stiffer it will be — kind of like the difference between sheer fabric and thick canvas! However… this means figuring out the rows and stitches all over again! Boo! But being able to take measurements from the slippers you already made (plus having made and fitted them before) should keep it a fairly painless process, right?

Sandy - I have made a lot of slippers for charity….these are wonderful slippers, but how do you keep them on? If you switch to a smaller hook and sc around the top it will close them in a little. Also, on the heel I decrease in the last two rows. That shapes the heel…taking away the boxiness.
Your slippers are great, I just have a couple ideas to make them greater!02.13.2022 – 11:26am
admin - The trick to making these so that they stay on is to make them shorter from toe to heel than your actual foot measurement. Your fixes sound good, though! –Gail04.17.2022 – 2:10pm
